A Designated Hospital for Clinical Training
St. Lukes’s has long been recognized as the foremost teaching hospital for professional healthcare providers, a role that has been recognized by public health authorities. In 1933, St. Luke’s became the first hospital in Japan to adopt American-style clinical training programs for interns and residents and has subsequently served as a model training facility for post-graduate interns in Japan. In 1949, the hospital was designated as an intern training site under a Ministry of Health and Welfare (now the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare) program. When this effort was abolished in 1968 and replaced by a new Ministry initiative, St. Luke’s was designated as a clinical training hospital. We continue to pioneer in offering the finest post-graduate clinical training.
Since 2004, in accordance with the Ministry’s policy change, St. Luke’s has conducted the two-year mandatory post-graduate training for all interns, which supports the acquisition of basic clinical competencies. We further provide specialty and subspecialty training, enabling doctors to develop expertise in particular fields, obtain certification or become clinical researchers.
Back to Top Ward Residency and Attending Doctor System
Our residency and attending doctor system affords invaluable opportunities for onsite learning. Under the supervision of attending doctors, full-time residents stationed in the wards of Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatric and Obstetrics and Gynecology are directly responsible for the care of inpatients. Specialized training and mentoring are available from chief and senior residents in each ward.
