Dedicated, team-based nursing care

St. Luke’s Nursing Department is a core component of our healthcare services that carry on our founder’s legacy in patient-oriented care. The Department operates as a team of caring professionals that continually strives to advance the profession.

At the heart of this Department’s activities is the desire to continually improve the patient’s quality of life and build self-reliance through sustained, individualized attention. To this end, we utilize the full complement of clinical resources in a collaborative environment. We are also working to create an optimal department structure in which our nursing staff can apply their specialized expertise and benefit from ongoing in-house educational advancement with the support of nursing assistants and volunteers in a warm, caring environment.

The Supply, Processing and Distribution (SPD) Center helps to safeguard and improve the quality of our nursing services by maintaining a central sterilization room and an information center in which senior resource nurses disseminate technical knowledge, share skills and offer ongoing mentoring.

Basic technical training for new nurses

We strengthened our role in preventive medicine and public health in 1923 with the establishment of our Department of Public Health Nursing and enhanced its effectiveness in 1992 by restructuring the department into the Health Guidance Section and Home Care Service Section. In 1997, the Health Guidance Section expanded its ability to reach and care for a broader range of patients by opening specialized care centers for lifestyle-related diseases, including the Diabetic Clinic and the Kidney Clinic.

Our Home Care Service delivers professional, home-based treatment to patients, allowing registered nurses to respond to emergencies at any time.

Patient-focused Nursing Care System

Individualized care is the cornerstone of St. Luke’s philosophy of service. The staff-to-patient ratio in our general wards is five nurses for every seven patients, and we maintain a ratio of one nurse for every seven patients during night shifts. This level of care helps reduce hospital stays at St. Luke’s to about ten days compared to the prevailing average of twenty days. We have also taken a variety of actions to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of each ward. To strengthen the coordination of care, for example, we utilize a team nursing assignment system incorporating interdisciplinary services. In addition, we provide both primary and functional nursing care. A two-shift system, based on each ward’s determination of need, is the standard at St. Luke’s.

Our nursing staff works closely with physicians to provide one-to-one outpatient support and counseling; they bring a personal touch to guidance and care plans related to the daily living issues of those with chronic illnesses.

Patient privacy and comfort are paramount concerns which we strive to address through the single care unit structure of our private rooms. This arrangement also affords an extra level of care to prevent the spread of infection. Each nursing unit in our general ward contains only thirty-five beds so that each patient receives the personal attention they require.
